We only see what Is visible

Sometimes the life we envy is carrying burdens we never see.

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is how easily we compare our lives with those of others.

Whether it’s at work, among friends, or even on social media, we often end up believing everyone else has it easier than we do.

We see someone getting promoted, buying a new house, travelling the world, or always smiling, and quietly tell ourselves,

“They are lucky. My life is full of problems.”

The reality is simple. We are judging someone’s life without knowing what they’re carrying behind the scenes.

A simple analogy

Imagine a rose plant and a cactus growing side by side in the same garden.

The Rose

• Beautiful flowers
• Sweet fragrance
• Everyone admires it
• Flowers are often plucked
• Beauty makes it vulnerable

The Cactus

• Covered with thorns
• Rarely admired
• Built to survive drought
• Left untouched
• Strength comes from resilience

If the Rose could think…

“Look at the cactus. Nobody plucks it. Nobody cuts its branches. It simply stands there protected by its own thorns. What a peaceful life.”

But the rose never realises that its beauty is exactly what makes it vulnerable.

If the Cactus could compare…

“Everyone admires the rose. People smile when they see it. Nobody notices me unless they touch my thorns.”

It wishes it had colourful petals and a sweet fragrance.

Both are only seeing the advantages of the other.

What the Rose Doesn’t Know

• How difficult desert life is.
• What it takes to survive without rain.
• The strength hidden inside the cactus.

What the Cactus Doesn’t Know

• What it feels like to lose every flower.
• How beauty attracts pain.
• The burden of always being admired.

Neither was created to become the other.

The Garden is no different from our Workplace

Our careers are surprisingly similar. Every day we compare ourselves with others.

We usually see:

• Promotions
• Better salaries
• Awards
• Recognition

We rarely see:

• Sleepless nights
• Family sacrifices
• Pressure
• Stress
• Personal struggles

“Why not me?”

Because every success has a story that isn’t visible.

Everyone is fighting a different battle

Every person is solving a different set of problems.

• Some struggles are visible.
• Most are invisible.
• Every challenge is preparing someone for a different purpose.

Life doesn’t give everyone identical journeys because we were never meant to become identical people.

A better question to ask

Instead of asking “Why is their life better than mine?” ask

“Am I becoming a better version of myself than yesterday?”

The beauty of being different

🌹 The rose doesn’t need to become a cactus.

🌵 The cactus doesn’t need to become a rose.

The garden is beautiful because both exist together. The same is true in our workplaces, families, friendships, and life itself.

The next time you compare your life with someone else’s, remember:

You’re only seeing one chapter of their story, not the entire book.

Focus on your own journey. Solve the problems life has given you. You may one day realise those very challenges were preparing you for your purpose.

After all, the goal of life isn’t to live someone else’s story. It’s to write your own, as honestly and meaningfully as you can.
